Don’t Wake Me Up

I have never been a morning person, probably never will. In high school, I loathed the morning preps because all I could do was fight sleep the entire time (actually, the entire high school experience was torture for me, 8 subjects? Why?). For some reason, the darkness of the night seems to awaken my desire to learn new things or be creative. That is why most of your favourite blog posts here have been typed at night. There is something powerful and incredibly mollifying about typing away my thoughts on a keyboard at ungodly hours. Bleeding onto a word document at the devil’s time seems to be my muse.
The funniest memes on my social media feed appear at night too. I even seem to find solutions to my problems at night. I have made a lot of important decisions at night. On a number of occasions, I have resolved to end or continue my relationships at night hehehe! Yeah! I am the kind of person who will wake someone’s son up with that “We need to talk” kind of text in the morning, because what goes through my brain at night is the truth baby!
My nocturnal activities have rendered me a slave to sleeping late. The earliest I can go to bed is at midnight or on a good day, a few minutes to midnight. Of late however, I have been trying to kick bad habits and sleeping late has been on the top of my agenda. I like sticking to the plan and I can proudly confirm that this plan has been working… at least for the last few weeks. I have been going to sleep at 10:30pm milestone huh?
The plan was going well until last Sunday night. Here is the thing, I never switch off my phone when going to bed. Emergencies can happen at night and I wouldn’t want to be the one whose phone was off at the hour of need. I have also seen tons of memes about people who switch they phones off when going to bed hahaha! Below is the one that tickled me the most:

On Sunday night, I got to bed at 10:30pm as the new norm. I had only slept for slightly over 2 hours when someone called me. I really was supposed to be deep asleep but this call woke me up. Anyway what did I expect? My ringtone is Tyga’s Rack City Remix and who can fail to hear Wale’s catchy intro on Rack City Remix? The most heart-breaking part about this call was that it was not an emergency, actually it was a flash. Even more heart-breaking was that I struggled to get sleep after it. I tossed and turned in my bed for the next 3 hours. I was supposed to get the recommended 8 hours of beauty sleep but got 3 hours less instead. 3 hours of tossing and turning in my bed. 3 hours of begging sleep to come my way. 3 hours that I will never get back. Iliuma sana.
I know that the person who called, probably dialed my number accidentally. I am cognizant of the fact that I should accept that having a name that begins with letter ‘A’ makes me more prone to accidental dials because I tend to top the contacts list in the phones of those who have my number. It sucks guys. Long story short, I woke up feeling groggy and tired. That compounded by Monday blues made sure my week didn’t begin on the best note. But bora uhai
Ever heard Chris Brown’s song Don’t Wake Me Up? Yeah that is now my new motto. Seriously don’t wake me up. I really need my 8 hours of sleep. And yeah, I might just be switching my phone off when going to bed. Fuck ‘em emergencies.
Have an insomnia free week.
